An exhibition of paintinings of one of the greatest British painters of the 20th century, David Bomberg, will be opened at the Daniel Katz gallery in London to mark the 50th anniversary of the artist’s death. "In Celebration of David Bomberg" (1890-1957) will feature
22 paintings and drawings from private collections including an important recently discovered painting from 1914.

Bomberg, a Jewish artist, was among the leading artists of his generation and as a talented teacher during his final decade had a powerful influence on a whole school of British artists. During his lifetime his work met with incomprehension and neglect and it is only in the last 20 years that its full significance has been recognised, reflected in the exhibition devoted to him at the Tate Gallery in London in 1988.

The exhibit will include works spanning Bomberg's career, from his early days at the Slade School of Fine Art, through the dramatic turn to realism after the First World War and his trip to Palestine, to the years he spent in Toledo, Cuenca and then Ronda.

One of the highlights of the exhibition will be the newly discovered painting from 1914 entitled "The Dancer." Another work that has never been exhibited before, nor published, is the charcoal "Figure Composition," which represents a major addition to the body of Bomberg’s oeuvre. The drawing, inspired by the death of his mother in October 1912, relates to the Jewish tradition of mourning emphasised by the Torah scrolls held by one of the figures.
