(Video) Russian-Israeli billionaire Arcadi Gaydamak pledged Friday $30 million to Sderot to fortify public and residential structures in the rocket-battered city. Sderot Mayor Eli Moyal said after a meeting with Gaydamak that the donation will be used to fortify about 1,300 apartments in the city. The city has been under intensified rocket attacks by Hamas gunmen in the Gaza Strip for the last six days. "During the meeting Moyal presented the problem of fortifications. We will seek to finish the fortifications of houses within four months. Over the next 15 days the first building will be fortified and I will fund everything. We will begin with multi-storey residential buildings," Gaydamak said. Moyal praised Gaydamak for his contribution to Sderot's security and the well-being of its residents. "Gaydamak is a welcomed citizen and we have a special relationship with him. He offered to fortify all the residential buildings … We told him there were 1,500 unprotected apartments," Moyal said. On Wednesday, Gaydamak funded the evacuation of about 3,000 of the city's 23,000 residents while the Ministry of Defense organized the evacuation of 800 others. Many more left on their own initiative. Israel believes Hamas wants to draw Israel into the Gaza Strip where its gunmen have been engaged in fierce fighting with members of the rival Fatah faction. Over 50 Palestinians, mostly Fatah members, were killed since fighting broke out on Sunday. The fighting threatened to destroy a two-month power-sharing deal between the two factions and raised fears that the Gaza Strip was sliding into all-out civil war.
