Qassams hit Sderot Tuesday evening

Several barrages hit Sderot and neighboring areas on eve of Shavuot holiday; Palestinian groups say attacks will continue

Five Qassam rockets were fired at Sderot and neighboring towns Tuesday night, the eve of the Shavuot holiday. No casualties resulted from any of the attacks, although one woman was hospitalized for shock.

In the first barrage, one rocket landed within Sderot city limits, causing damage to several homes and vehicles.  Another rocket landed in an open area directly next to a western Negev kibbutz. A third rocket, which landed in an open area outside Sderot, caused a fire.

The military wings of Hamas and Fatah - the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades and the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, respectively – claimed responsibility for these attacks.

In the second barrage, no casualties or damages were reported, although one woman did suffer from emotional trauma. The Salah a-Din Brigades, the military arm of the Popular Resistance Committees claimed responsibility for this barrage.

The Palestinian organizations promised continued rocket fire, despite the fact that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas recently arrived in Gaza to discuss the deteriorating security situation.

An IDF helicopter fired on Palestinians next to the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza, in response to the Qassam attacks, which had been launched from that area a few minutes prior.  Palestinian sources said that three Palestinian farmers were lightly to moderately wounded, as a result.

Israeli airstrikes early Tuesday targeted two terror camps in northern Gaza.  According to IDF sources, one was a Hamas weapons cache and one was an operations room of the Palestinian Resistance Committees.

Israeli officials had pledged a harsh response to a rocket attack that killed an Israeli woman Monday night.

The woman, Shirel Feldman (32), was critically wounded on the way to visit her mother, when a rocket hit her vehicle. She died of her wounds shortly after the attack. A Sderot man was moderately wounded, from the same attack.

Sderot residents, shocked by the death, expressed their anger by kicking Interior Minister Avi Dichter out of the area on Tuesday, when he attempted to attend Feldman's funeral.
