An acre here, an acre there

Zionism faces mortal danger as Jewish land rights are being undermined

A spokesperson on behalf of the Israel Land Administration (ILA) voiced her opinion on Israel Radio in support of the attorney general's stance that founding a Jewish neighborhood (in Carmiel) on land owned by the Jewish National Fund – is illegal!

If the High Court of Justice endorses this, it will mark the end of the Zionist enterprise, as according to a treaty signed between the ILA and the Jewish National Fund (JNF), only the ILA is authorized to market lands owned by the JNF. The JNF's hands are tied by the High Court of Justice's Kaadan ruling, which forbade it to allocate land in the Kazir community in the north of Israel to the Jewish Agency for Jewish residences only. Hence, the value of "equality" erased the Zionist vision.

And what about "affirmative action," is this also a sacred value upheld by the "enlightened people"? Take a look at the High Court Avitan ruling, for example: The story of a Jew who sought to lease a plot from the ILA in a community designated for "Bedouin only," and who was rejected by the High Court which ruled that the "Bedouin are a unique group …deserving of assistance and encouragement and special favored treatment."

The idea that Jews are also a unique group and the actual founding of their state constitutes affirmative action for the most persecuted people in the world didn't occur to these justices.

When the Jewish Agency was deprived of the right to settle Jews on state land, what remained were JNF lands, "land of the nation," but not according to Attorney General Menachem Mazuz who left the JNF to fend for itself against the High Court in a bid to save what is still left of the "Jewish" state.

No need to bother, Ahmadinejad

Upon planting the Kaadan seed of calamity, Justice Barak wrote: "We are taking the first step on a difficult and sensitive path…despite this, even if…it will be long, it is crucial that we are always aware not only of where we came from but also where we are heading…." The second step – towards a "state for all its citizens" - is now being taken by Mazuz.

The High Court-JNF ruling, into which Arab petitioners are trying to hammer the last nail in the coffin of the Zionist enterprise, is supposed to create a "sex change" in the JNF, which describes itself as the "trustee over lands owned by the Jewish People, assuring them for the continued Zionist enterprise in Israel."

The ruling will have to force the JNF to breach the trust of millions of Jews who contributed to "redeeming the land" for the sake of the Jewish people rather than for the Palestinians, and put its land at their disposal after expropriating it from Jewish ownership.

Did Mr. Mazuz think this through? For example, did he think about the international document that started it all – the League of Nations' Palestine Mandate, according to which it recognized "the historical connection of the Jewish people with Palestine and to the grounds for reconstituting their national home in that country?"

The mandate stipulated that Britain was made responsible for "placing the country under such political, administrative and economic conditions as will secure the establishment of the Jewish national home," namely – discriminatory conditions in favor of Jewish inhabitation.

The mandate also stressed the encouragement of "close settlement by Jews on the land, including State lands and waste lands not required for public purposes."

Yet in the eyes of today's enlightened justices, "close settlement" of Jews in itself is negligible. Ahmadinejad is trying to "uproot Zionism entirely," yet he can spare himself the bother. We'll do it ourselves.
