US defense chief: Tackle root causes of terrorism to neutralize extremism

Combating the underlying causes of extremism such as poverty and autocratic rule will help curtail suicide bombers, but it is not a panacea to end global terrorism, US Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Saturday.

Gates declined to say who was winning the US-led war on terror when asked during a question-and-answer session at an Asian security conference in Singapore. (AP)
