Surge recorded in New England aliyah

180 US Jews attend farewell ceremony before moving to Israel for good

Some 180 American Jews who are about to move to Israel will attend a farewell reception, the Boston Jewish advocate reported last week.

"The surge of area residents immigrating to Israel continues, as more New Englanders will make aliyah in 2007 than any other year to date," the report said.

The reception, held by the Israel Aliyah Center, is being held to "honor Israel's future citizens."

"This is a major moment, and a huge responsibility for me," the Advocate quoted Tova Grushko, regional director of the Center, as saying.

"These are high-quality people coming from this area who are going to change the face of Israel," she added.

The report interviewed one immigrant, Tom Schultheiss, 46, of Cambridge Massachusetts, "who has accepted a position at Technion as a senior lecturer." While he was excited for the move, Schultheiss said "the prospect of starting a new life is also daunting."

Wiesenthal Center slams 'blood libel' display at California college

The California-based Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC) has condemned a display organized by a Muslim student organization on the campus of the University of California, Irvine, the Los Angeles Jewish Observer reported.

The display was described as including a "'blood-smeared' apartheid wall and Israeli flag."

Rabbi Abraham Cooper, of the SWC, was quoted by the report as saying: "These actions are not about academic freedom but pure hate propaganda."

"This new 'Blood Libel' against the Jewish State comes at a time when innocent Israeli civilian communities are specifically targeted by Hamas, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of children from Sderot," he said, adding that a 32 year-old Israeli woman was murdered by a Qassam rocket in the town.

Australia: Anti-Semitic Muslim leader stands down

"Sheikh Tajeddin al-Hilaly, the controversial cleric whose virulently anti-Semitic attacks on Jews date back to 1988, today stood down as the spiritual leader of the country's 350,000-plus Muslims," the Australian Jewish News (AJN) reported.

The Muslim leader was reappointed by an Australian Muslim organization, but has reportedly declined the offer to continue in the post.

"Sheikh Hilaly has been the nemesis of the Jewish community since his infamous speech at the University of Sydney in 1988, in which he accused the Jews of being the cause of all wars," the AJN said.

"Since then he has regularly raised the ire of the Jews. In 2004, he praised suicide bombers while visiting a mosque in southern Lebanon, and was accused this year of channeling money raised in Australia to Hizbullah fighters in Lebanon," the report added.
