Hundreds of tons of food allowed into Gaza

Israel permits dozens of trucks carrying tons of foodstuff and medical supplies to enter Strip. Additionally, eight injured Palestinians evacuated to Israeli hospitals, some 100 foreign citizens leave Gaza Thursday

Israel allowed the transfer of hundreds of tons of provisions and medical equipment into the Gaza Strip Thursday, and has also evacuated eight wounded Palestinians through the Erez crossing to Israel for hospital treatment.

Additionally, two Red Cross surgeons were permitted entry into the Strip during the day, in order to aid with medical treatment in Gaza's hospitals.

Meanwhile, the Karni terminal will remain closed Friday following Hamas' takeover of the Strip. Defense officials explained that the crossing cannot be opened until there are counterparts on the Palestinian side with which operations can be coordinated.

They added that due to the situation in Gaza, the collapse of the Palestinian security forces and the fact that the terminal was partly looted during the clashes, it was unlikely that the crossing would resume operations in the near future.

'Israel will continue to help'

The Coordination and Liaison Unit in Erez keeps searching for different ways to provide Gazans with humanitarian aid. Earlier, they coordinated the passage of dozens of trucks carrying basic necessities and medical supplies into Gaza, via the Kerem Shalom crossing.

The supplies included 130 tons of flour, some 50 tons each of rice and sugar, 34 tons of pasta, 20 tons of beans, 30 tons of margarine, 18.5 of barley, 33 tons of lentils, five tons of tea, eight tons of powdered milk, 15 tons of humus, two tons of soup and seven tons of astringents.

The foodstuffs and medical supplies were provided by international organizations and their representatives are responsible for distributing them to the Palestinian community.

Tens of thousands of liters of gasoline, natural gas and diesel fuel were transferred into Gaza via the fuel terminal at Nahal Oz.

Members of the defense establishment expressed satisfaction at the resolution of the refugee issue at Erez crossing, which was solved after dozens of Palestinians were evacuated into Egypt through Kerem Shalom.

Security sources said that the fact that only 60 people had squatted at Erez crossing and that only half of that number agreed to leave for Egypt indicates that recent reports alleging massive numbers of refugees desperate to flee the Gaza Strip were incorrect.

"In any case," the sources said, "Israel will continue to do everything possible to provide humanitarian aid to civilians without harming its security interests."
