Thousands cycle for kidnapped soldiers

Bicycle journey commemorating captured soldiers Ehud Goldwasser, Eldad Regev takes place as soldiers' families express anger at gov't's indifference

Some 5,000 cyclists took part in a journey saluting IDF soldiers Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev, who were kidnapped by Hizbullah last year.

The 14 kilometer (8.6 mile) trail started south of Nahariya Saturday morning, and ended in Rosh Hanikra, where a short rally was held in support of the soldiers and thier families.

The trail was organized by Israel's cyclists' organization, in an attempt to raise public awareness of the matter of the captives. The thousands of participants created a 2 kilometer (1.2 mile) long train.

At the rally held at the end of the trail, Karnit Goldwasser, Ehud's wife said that a year after the kidnapping, the families still had no information on the fate of their loved ones.

"We are at the exact same point we were at one year ago," Karnit said, asking to get the message across to the decision makers – the prime minister and ministers – of the urgent need for a sign of life from the captives, and action toward bringing them home.

Shlomo Goldwasser, Ehud's father, told Ynet at the end of the rally that the great number of cyclists arriving at the event gave the families some encouragement, "and testifies to the fact that the voters demand that the government makes a move, does something."

Shlomo added that he expected an active government, and not an indifferent one, which he views as a sign of surrender to Hizbullah head Hassan Nasrallah and his terms.

"I am angry at the government's conduct, both the Ehuds (Olmert and Barak). They are playing Nasrallah's game. He is playing poker with our sons' lives."

"The government is cooperating and playing his game, instead of playing with their own cards, and dictating the rules of the game. If the government doesn't get its act together, I am afraid our case will end like previous kidnapping cases that have taken place over the past few years," Shlomo said.
