New 2-shekel coin

2-shekel coin within weeks

Bank of Israel receives first shipment of new coins to be introduced into circulation soon

Israel’s residents can expect the addition of the 2-shekel coin to their wallets within weeks.

The Bank of Israel has received the first shipment of the new coins, and after their size, weight, and metal composition is approved, they will be put into circulation.

Pending approval, a Dutch coin press manufacturer is expected to begin mass production of the new coin within the next few days, and the first commercial shipments of the coin are anticipated to arrive in Israel in a matter of weeks.

The new coin is meant to make cash payments more efficient, and to save on costs of manufacturing the 1-shekel coin.

The 2-shekel coin is silver coated and has a diameter of 2.16 cm. One side of the coin indicates its value, while the other side shows an image inspired by an ancient Jewish coin from the Hasmonean period.
