Body parts left at scene of Jaffa blast

Jaffa residents say police refused to collect remains of man killed in truck explosion, told them to remove them on their own

Jaffa residents who arrived at the scene of a truck explosion which took place on a central street Friday afternoon were surprised to find the remains of the body of a man killed in the blast. They were also surprised by the police's response when they asked that the body parts be collected.

One person was killed and six others were wounded after a truck carrying beer barrels exploded in the intersection of Yefet and Ehrlich streets in Jaffa shortly before 12:30 pm Friday.

The explosion occurred at the truck's rear, which was completely destroyed.

Massive damage was caused to houses in the area of the blast, and several cars caught fire and were totally destroyed.

Rami, a worker at one of the stores on the street, told Ynet, "At around 4 pm I reported to the police that they had 'forgotten' to collect the body parts. A policeman arrived and asked me to wash the body parts with water.

"The policeman also told me, 'He is anyway not Jewish, so his body will be cremated. I was in shock."

Ynet received shocking pictures of the body parts found at the scene of the explosion shortly after it took place, but chose not to publish them due to their content.

Rami said that the body parts he found were relatively large and that members of the ZAKA rescue organization arrived at the scene of the blast four hours after it occurred and collected some of the remains.

"I also turned to the municipality, but they also told me they would not deal with it. Because it was a foreign worker, all the officials involved are ignoring this in a disgusting way without any respect to the foreign worker, even after his tragic death," Rami said, warning that many people may arrive at the area on Saturday morning and encounter the body parts left there.

"I was more amazed by the disrespect I encountered than by the shocking sight of the body parts," he said, adding that "it is not a citizen's responsibility to deal with the body parts."

The Tel Aviv District Police said in response, "Security forces exerted all their efforts in order to clean the scene and attend to the injured. The body itself was transferred to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for identification and further investigation."

As for the body parts left at the scene, the police refused to respond.
