Likud leader slams defense minister for 2000 Lebanon withdrawal, which he says was 'irresponsible escape'

Ehud Barak, Israel's new defense minister, is "an amateur, reckless and an adventurer," Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu said during a conference marking one year since the Second Lebanon War broke out in Tel Aviv Tuesday evening.

"Barak's government brought Nasrallah to the border. The withdrawal from Lebanon was an irresponsible escape," he stated.

Likud MK Limor Livnat slammed Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and said that he failed to show up for the memorial for the Second Lebanon War, "because he's a coward, a chicken. He didn't function during the war and abandoned the citizens. His government is reckless and paralyzed."

The MK also attacked Barak, and said that the 2000 south Lebanon pullout bolstered Hizbullah.

Another Likud MK, Gideon Sa'ar, also leveled harsh words at the new Labor chairman. "He undermined Israel's deterrence capability by leading the escape from Lebanon and failing to respond to the kidnapping of the three soldiers (in October 2000).

"He created the foundation for the kidnappings. He enslaved the State's interests to his election campaign. The two Ehuds should go home."
