Israeli Manufacturers Association's textile division reports increase in import of cheap textile from China, says imports causing serious harm to industry in Israel
According to a representative of the Israeli Manufacturers Association's textile division, bulk imports of textile from China, at cheap prices, is causing serious harm to the industry.
The representative noted that in the first three months of 2007, 174 million textile items were imported, five times more than in the first quarter of 2006. The total value of textile imported from China in the three months period was $40.5 million.
In the first quarter of 2007, 11.3 million socks were imported from China, three times as many compared to the parallel period last year.
In total, in the first quarter of 2007 Israel imported four times (190 million items) as many textile items compared to the parallel period in 2006 (46 million items). The total value of textile imported to Israel was $85 million, an increase of 19.5 percent compared to the first quarter of 2006.
