IDF plans power station in Negev

Station to supply Nevatim base with 17 megawatts of electricity

The IDF is planning to build a private power station that would supply the Nevatim army base in the Negev Desert with 17 megawatts of electricity, Yedioth Ahronot reported Thursday.

The station, which will be the first ever built on an IDF base, will operate on natural gas.

The IDF is planning a small power station, powered by natural gas and diesel fuel. Army sources said the goal is to eventually have the power station run on natural gas alone and keep the option of using diesel fuel as backup.

Military officials have recently met with National Infrastructure Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, who instructed the relevant parties to advance the project, which will entail moving the natural gas pipelines in the area so they would pass through the Nevatim base.
