Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad is Fatah's leading candidate to replace Mahmoud Abbas as Palestinian President.
Palestinian sources told Jordanian newspaper al-Dustour that Fatah member Abu Maher Ghanem was nominated for the role but refused and that the United States was pressuring to promote Fayyad. Abbas has made public several times in the past his desire to retire at the end of his current term in office in a year and a half. (Roee Nahmias)
