Border Guard officer accidentally kills friend
Initial investigation finds policeman believed M-16 rifle was not loaded. Friend's death pronounced at the scene
The shooting occurred when the policeman shook his M-16 rifle. The young man shot suffered a fatal wound to the chest.
Magen David Adom emergency services received a report of a gunshot victim at around 7:30 pm. "When we arrived there was no one in the house but the wounded man… we performed CPR for about an hour, but eventually had no choice but to pronounce him dead," told Ynet Elad Bachar, the paramedic who arrived at the scene.
Chief Superintendent Avi Haliwa told Ynet that "an initial investigation revealed that the shooter, a Border Guard policeman serving in the West Bank city of Hebron, rattled the weapon – which he believed was not loaded – causing it to fire."
The investigation has been turned over to the police's Internal Affairs Division.
