Sderot parents launch unlimited school strike

After two days of rocket attacks, with one Qassam landing near a kindergarten, parents' committee decides to launch strike in southern town's high schools until further notice; elementary schools to join strike on Wednesday

Following Monday morning's rocket attack on Sderot, the town's parents committee decided to launch an unlimited strike in the town's high schools starting Tuesday morning.Elementary schools will join the strike on Wednesday.

The parents also plan to launch a protest outside Sderot on Wednesday, including building a "school" opposite the Knesset.

The decision came at the end of a meeting with Sderot Mayor Eli Moyal. The parents are set to meet with the mayor later Monday night to discuss further steps to be taken in protest of the government's treatment of the continued Qassam attacks.

Seven rockets were fired at Sderot on Monday morning, with one of them landing near a kindergarten leaving 12 children in shock. The children were evacuated to the Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon for treatment.

Sasson Sara, head of the town's parents' committee, said after the attacks, "We get a lot of phone calls from parents. We see that in this situation it is impossible to continue school routine. It is clear that we cannot have school routine in the condition.

Part of the promises the government made to us have not yet been kept. It is also not clear when the fortified stations that were promised to us will arrive and we plan to discuss this."

Shortly after the attack, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said, "We view this attack very severely. We will not budge on this matter.

"We will hit all those in the chain of command who harbor terrorists and act against the State of Israel. We have done it in the past. It has taken a heavy toll and it will take a very heavy toll in the future as well. We will not hesitate to hill anyone threatening residents of the south."

Last week, the town's parents' committee threatened not to open the school year due to the lack of fortified classrooms, but decided last minute to postpone the strike out of the desire to give their children "a bit of routine life in the delusional reality of Qassams".
