The Bubble, hitting movie theaters worldwide

'The Bubble' stars on international magazine covers

Stars of Eitan Fox's 'The Bubble' appear on cover of prestigious Advocate magazine days ahead of NY commercial showing

Just a little over a year since hitting the movie theatres in Israel, the Israeli movie "The Bubble", produced by Eitan Fox, will begin a series of commercial screenings throughout movie theaters in the US.

An Israeli film being shown abroad is nothing new, but the actors of Shenkin Street's "The Bubble" have succeeded in breaching another crack in the international media, with two of the cast featuring on the cover of the prestigious Advocate magazine which is celebrating its 40th year.

"Can love between a Jew and an Arab heal the Middle East?" says the headline by the smiling faces of actors Youssef Sweid and Ohad Knoller, and answers itself: "It couldn't hurt!" The cover page directs readers to five pages devoted entirely to the movie, the actors its creators and the city of Tel Aviv.

In "The Bubble" Eitan Fox decided to go all the way. The sex scene portrayed in the movie is a bit hard to digest.

From his hotel room in New York Fox sounds like a proud father, and he has every reason to.

"Well, yes, I am very proud to see Youssef and Ohad smiling at me from every newspaper stand in the city," he says.

He takes a somewhat modest stance, "Even the headline is spot on. After all I made this movie in order to stir a debate on the matter, to make people think and not go on automatic mode with prejudices about places and people they don't know. The Advocate magazine is sold at every airport and train station in the US, the whole of the United States is being exposed to the movie and to Tel Aviv and that makes me very happy."

The host of photographs adorning the article, including the one where the two actors are posing against the backdrop of the Old City of Jaffa, were taken by Israeli photographer Karin Bar.

"At first they wanted to fly the boys overseas for an American photographer to shoot them, but Israeli photographers are just as good and this presents an opportunity for them as well," Fox says.

A moment before he gets into his fancy suit for the film showing at the Museum of Modern Art in New York Wednesday, Fox tries to catch his breath. Following months of openings, including in France (in 65 movie theaters), Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo (six movie theaters), Switzerland and Belgium, he is ready to come home.

"The whole thing sounds glamorous, but truth is we have been on the road for a year and it's pretty exhausting. I can't wait to get back to Tel Aviv and start working on my next movie," he says.

Meanwhile he is enjoying the heart-warming entry of "The Bubble" into the list of five autumn pearls proposed by the "Village Voice" magazine to its readers and the praise of the "New York Magazine" which included "The Bubble" in its Best of the Rest list, aimed at low-budget independent productions.

"Awards and titles are nice, but the best thing is the feeling which has developed over the last few weeks that a real and ongoing link has been created with the audience. People are discussing the movie within the context of my former works, a dialog has been created that deals with repeated themes and different motifs they found in the "Yossi and Jagger" movie and "Walk on Water." It's great fun speaking with ordinary people, ticket buyers in all sorts of places."
