1,500 tons of honey to be sold ahead of New Year

Honey Council reports 5% increase in honey consumption ahead of High Holydays this year

Israelis will be purchasing 1,500 tons of honey ahead of the High Holydays this year, according to Shahar Tene, head of the Israeli Honey Council.

 

According to Tene, this comprises a 5% increase from Israeli honey consumption this time last year.

 

"This year, there is much interest in honey varieties," Tene said.

 

"We see a rise in the consumption of varities of honey and are witnessing the acquisition of honey directly from producers, from boutique beehives, in addition to purchasing at marketing chains and shops," he added.

 

A poll carried out by the Mutagim Institute among 500 households revealed the use of honey for health reasons including treating colds and winter diseases.

 

In the Russian sector, honey is used mainly for sweetening tea and cooking, and mainly by adults.

 

The haredi public uses honey mainly as a spread for children, other then the widespread use during the holidays, for dipping apples and baking honey cakes.
