Gunmen kill state police chief in northern Mexico

Unidentified gunmen shot to death the public safety director of the northern state of San Luis Potosi, continuing the trend of organized crime-style executions in states where such violence had previously been rare.

Jaime Flores Escamilla was gunned down Thursday while driving a van in which his wife and son were also traveling in the state capital, which bears the same name. Neither of them was hurt in the attack, local media reported. State officials were not immediately available to confirm that report. (AP)
