Germany charges man with spying for Syria

Prosecutors said Tuesday that they have charged a man with dual German-Syrian citizenship with spying on Syrians living in Germany. Federal prosecutors said they charged the man, identified only as 57-year-old Atef N. From Bonn, with working as an agent for a secret service. The charges were filed at a Duesseldorf court on August 10.

The man is accused of agreeing to work for intelligence services in Syria during a visit to the country in 2001 or 2002, a statement from prosecutors said. Until last year, he gathered information on the activities and organizations of Syrians living in Germany, it added. (AP)
