Germany wants Iran sanctions drive to stay at UN
Germany says it is ready to back tougher economic sanctions against Iran if Tehran refuses to freeze its nuclear enrichment program, but does not want to bypass the United Nations, diplomats and analysts say.
As Western powers prepare to tighten the screws on a defiant Iran, Berlin has made it clear that it will remain on board provided two conditions are met. In the short term any new sanctions should have Security Council backing, and in the long term the use of military force must be avoided, they say. (Reuters)
