'The Band's Visit' wins Tokyo festival

Eran Kolirins' film won the prestigious Sakura award at the Tokyo International Film Festival

With or without a nomination for the best foreign language film award at the Academy Awards, Israeli director Eran Kolirins' film 'The Band's Visit' continues to win awards. The judges at the Tokyo International Film Festival, awarded Kolirins' debut film the 2007 best film award.


Kolirins receives prize this morning in Tokyo

 

This is the second Israeli film to win the $50,000 worth Sakura Award; in 2005, the prize was awarded to Nir Bergman's 'Broken Wings'.

 

Earlier this year, 'The Band's Visit' won eight Israeli Ofir prizes awarded by the Israeli Film Academy and several international prizes including the 'Coup de Coeur du Jury' at Cannes Film Festival and the Grand Jury Special Prize and the Audience Award at the Copenhagen International Film Festival.

 

So far, the film has been sold for distribution in 58 countries worldwide.
