Fayyad threatens al-Aqsa it must cooperate with PA security plan

Palestinian security forces arrest al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade members that have yet to sign on to new security plan championed by Palestinian Authority; US consul in Jerusalem monitoring progress of PA counter-terrorism efforts in Nablus

The Palestinians Authority is continuing its crackdown on wanted members of the al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade, the military wing of Fatah, who have yet to commit to the Palestinain Authority's new security

plan.

PA forces arrested Fayyaz Tirawi, a senior al-Aqsa leader, in the Balata refugee camp in Nablus on Tuesday night. Tirawi is currently still being held at the PA's Jenaid prison in Nablus.

Last week, the PA arrested a number of al-Aqsa members in Nablus. Some were taken to a PA prison in Jericho - with Israeli approval - to be incarcerated.

PA officials believe that their efforts to control al-Aqsa in Nablus will help their security plan succeed in other cities in the West Bank as well.

Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad visited the West Bank city again on Wednesday and spoke about the importance of the new security initiative.

Fayyad visited the city with the Jacob Walles, the US consul in Jerusalem. Welch was tasked with observing and reporting on the progress of the Palestinian's efforts. US officials were involved in the drafting of the security plan.

Welch promised that the US would continue its financial aid and assistance to PA security forces in Nablus.

Palestinians officials are hopeful that their efforts in Nablus will gain them favor with Israel, as well as help bring about an IDF withdrawal from other Palestinian areas in the West Bank.

The PA is requesting that the IDF withdraw the positions it held before the outbreak of violence in September of 2000. Israel, for its part, wants the PA to genuinely combat terror groups still operating in the West Bank.
