Gaza: Sniper fires at Israeli photographers

Four photographers employed by news agencies nearly hit by Palestinian gunfire directed towards them from Gaza Strip

Israeli news photographers employed by various news agencies were miraculously unharmed on Monday after they were fired upon by a gunman in the Gaza Strip in an incident that took place near the separation fence.

Around 2:30 pm, three photographers were standing on a hill near the Erez border crossing on the edge of the Gaza Strip. A fourth photographer was sitting in his car close to the other three.

At a certain point, the photographers noticed a Qassam rocket being fired from the area of Beit Lahiya in the northern Gaza Strip. They moved towards the launching site in order to get a better look at what was going on.

As they were walking, they heard a sudden burst of automatic gunfire.

"It was clear that it was gunfire," one of the photographers said. "The bullets whizzed by our legs."

The group ran towards an IDF post nearby where they realized that a few bullets had struck their cars and caused some damage.

"We quickly understood that they had noticed that we were standing there, and a sniper tried his luck at hitting us. We were really lucky that the incident ended with only our cars getting hit and no human injuries," another photographer said.

The gunfire seems to have been from a Hamas sniper that noticed the photographers. The bullets might have come from a heavy machine gun and not an assault rifle. The IDF spoke with the group and took notes on what they had observed.
