IDF kills senior PRC operative

About two hours after suicide bombing in Dimona, Palestinians report booby-trapped car exploded near northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Lahiya; attack targets Salah al-Din Brigades commander Abu Sa'ad. IDF, Shin Bet confirm assassination

The IDF and the Shin Bet on Monday killed a senior member of the Popular Resistance Committees in the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Lahiya.

Palestinian sources reported that the man injured was identified as Abu Sa'ad, a commander of the Salah al-Din Brigades, who also served as the PRC spokesman.

At first the Palestinians reported that an IDF aircraft had fired a missile at the vehicle Abu Sa'ad was traveling in, but later said that a booby-trapped car had exploded near the vehicle he was traveling in.

The Palestinians reported at first that Abu Sa'ad was killed in the attack, but the hospital later said that he was brain dead. He died of his wounds shortly afterwards.

The IDF reported that Abu Sa'ad was not inside the vehicle, but was standing next to it.

Abu Sa'ad had escaped at least three assassinations in the past. In one incident, the IDF fired directly at his home in Jabalya. PRC officials said in response that his killing would not be ignored.

The IDF has used car bombs to assassinate senior Palestinian officials in the past, including Abed Salah al-Din commander Abed al-Koka and Walid Dahduh, a commander of the al-Quds Brigades, the Islamic Jihad's military wing.

The Gaza attack took place about two hours after a suicide bomber detonated an explosive belt in the southern Israeli town of Dimona, killing a woman and injuring about 10 people.

Also Monday morning, four Qassam rockets were fired from the northern Gaza Strip at Israel. One of the rockets landed in the town of Sderot, and the rest hit the Shaar Hanegev regional council. There were no reports of injuries or damage.
