Abbas offers to help broker Gaza ceasefire
Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas offered on Thursday to help broker a ceasefire between Palestinian militants in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip and Israel, his spokesman said.
"President Abbas is prepared to try to work towards a mutual ceasefire with Israel to stop the daily slaughter confronting the Palestinian people in Gaza," Nabil Abu Rudeina said. Hamas promptly rejected the offer. "It is clear that the proposition by president Abbas is a blackmail attempt against the Palestinian people whom he has left to be massacred," Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhum said. (AFP)
