Scared of Netanyahu

Remarks made by Winograd member reflect deeply rooted ‘Bibiphobia’

Winograd Commission Member Yehezkel Dror did us a great service when he recently described the fear in the face of Benjamin Netanyahu’s potential rise to power. His words regarding the fear of Netanyahu, including the comments taken out of context, exposed how deeply entrenched and natural this “Bibiphobia” has become among our “veteran oligarchy.”

To this day, they have not forgiven him for defeating Shimon Peres in the 1996 general elections. They know that their own parties will not be taking power, but now they are busy protecting their executing contractor in the Kadima party.

They will gladly accept words of peace even if they come from Olmert’s mouth. Just as long as it’s not Bibi.

As a service to the public, here is a suggestion for updating and correcting the Winograd report in the spirit of the fear of Bibi. For example, to Justice Winograd’s words about the “grave failures” in the way decisions were taken, the absence of discussion on available alternatives, and the manner in which Israel embarked on war, we should add the following sentence: “Yet on the other hand, would it be better to see Bibi elected?”

Similarly, the comments about the plethora of flaws and failures in the political leadership’s ability to monitor and guide the IDF in making sure that government instructions were indeed being carried out, we should add the following sentence: “Yet at the same time, by recognizing that personal conclusions against the prime minister may bring about the election of Netanyahu, we believe that we must act with the required responsibility.”

‘This is not why we established the commission’

It is also a good idea not to discriminate against the section of the report where commission members wrote that they believe the issue of taking responsibility is part of a proper normative value system. Here, the editor will have to add the following: “Unless the implication of this is that Bibi will come to power, as under such circumstances all of the above is null and void.”

Hence, every citizen must open the full report, and in every point where words like “failure” and “flaw” appear, he should make his own additions in line with the following sentence: “All of the above is conditioned on Bibi and the Likud not regaining power, because this is not why we established the commission.”

And on the same matter: If while reading through the Winograd report you failed to find the sentence “Ehud Olmert functioned superbly and all his decisions were accurate and based on good judgment, national responsibility, and strategic vision,” this must be because such sentences only appear in the classified section of the report.
