According to the sources, the strike targeted a cell of Hamas lookouts stationed on the Gaza-Israel border. The victim, Mohammad Matar, was a known Hamas operative in south Gaza.

Hamas and other terrorist organizations often station members along the border areas with Israel in order to watch for IDF incursions. Recently, the IDF has begun stepping up its strikes on these types of targets.

Minutes later Palestinians reported of another attack, this time on a Hamas security post situated between Rafah and Khan Younis. No injuries were reported in this attack.

At around 12:30 am Palestinian sources reported that the IDF struck the house of a senior Hamas operative. Preliminary reports indicate the strike resulted in a number of casualties.

The strikes in Gaza took place just a few hours after a Qassam attack on the western Negev city of Sderot left injured brothers Moshe (8) and Rami (19) Tuito. Doctors were fighting to save the young boy's leg.

Their father told Ynet, "this is a child who should be playing soccer and riding his bike; how can he have a severed leg when his entire life is still in front of him?"

Furious residents took to the streets and called on the government to approve an extensive military operation in Gaza.

Meanwhile, the residents of Gaza estimated that the IDF strikes were a mere prelude to harsher Israeli retaliation.
