Report: Mugniyah assassinated by Mossad agents

Sunday Times quotes Israeli intelligence sources as saying top Hizbullah commander killed by Mossad agents who used booby-trapped headrest. Mugniyah was working with Syria on attacks against Israeli targets

Mossad agents assassinated top Hizbullah commander Imad Mugniyah in Damascus by replacing the headrest of the driver’s seat in his car with another containing a small high-explosive charge, the Sunday Times quoted an Israeli intelligence sources as saying.

The British newspaper added that at the time of his death last Tuesday night, Mugniyah, 45, was working with Syria on planning terrorist attacks against Israeli targets to "avenge the Israeli strike on what was believed to be a secret nuclear site in Syria last year."

A witness to the killing told the newspaper, “I held his head in my hands, kissed him farewell. His face was burnt but intact and he had received serious injuries to his abdomen.”

The Sunday Express, also based in the UK, offered a different version of how the Israeli intelligence agency got to the arch-terrorist.

According to its report, three Mossad agents who entered Syria as tourists from Athens and Rome with Iranian passports loaded a car they had rented with explosives and detonated it beside Mugniyah's Mitsubishi Pajero jeep.

The report said that to make certain the target was in fact Mugniyah, one of the agents compared updated photos of the Hizbullah commander he had received from sources in Berlin with the man in the vehicle.

After successfully completing their mission, the agents headed immediately to the airport and left the country en route to Tel Aviv.
