Six Shiite pilgrims drown in Tigris River boat sinking south of Baghdad

None

A boat carrying 11 Shiites on a pilgrimage to the holy city of Karbala overturned in the Tigris river on Saturday drowning six people, police said.

The boat overturned near Kut, 100 miles southeast of Baghdad, they added. The pilgrims were headed to Karbala for Arbaeen, which marks the 40th day following the anniversary of the death of Imam Hussein, one Shiism's major figures who is buried there. Authorities expect millions of pilgrims in Karbala next Wednesday, at the peak of the event.
