8 killed in road accidents within 48 hours

Pedestrian dies after being hit by truck near community of Kiryat Sefer; intoxicated man lying on road in Rehovot area killed by car. Six more people die over weekend, including nine-year-old boy run over near fruit stand

No less than eight people were killed on Israel's roads within 48 hours.

A Palestinian in his 50s died Saturday night after being hit by a truck at a roadblock near the community of Kiryat Sefer, east of Tel Aviv. Magen David Adom paramedics dispatched to the area proclaimed him dead.

A short while later, another pedestrian was hit by a truck, this time on Road 40, not far from Rehovot.

According to testimonies collected by the police, the young man was intoxicated and may have been lying on the road, waiting for a car to pass. His girlfriend tried to stop him, but at a certain stage, after she managed to get him to stand up, a truck passed by and hit him. The man was seriously injured and later died of his wounds on site. Police were looking into the possibility that he had planned to take his own life.

On Saturday, nine-year old Nimrod Yeni, who was hit by a car north of the Ein Hakore junction in Rishon Lezion, succumbed to his injuries and died at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center. According to police reports, Yeni’s father stopped by the side of the road in order to buy vegetables from a local vendor.

Nimrod asked to join his father, and was allowed to do so after making sure the road was clear. The child later ventured off on his own, unbeknownst to his father, and was hit—and mortally wounded— by a passing vehicle. Yeni is the only child to a single mother, who decided to donate his organs.

Shmuel Mordo, a 59-year old cyclist, died Sunday at the Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer after being hit by a taxi driver. An anonymous pedestrian, who was hit by a car Thursday, also died Sunday at the medical center.

A motorcyclist was also killed Saturday in an accident in the vicinity of Haifa Bay. The cyclist was killed after hitting the dividing barrier on Highway 58. Superintendent Haim Halfon Chief of the Traffic Division at Central District of the Israeli Police Department said that “that speeding and loss of control over the motorcycle are the apparent causes of this tragic accident.”

On Friday evening, 21-year old Adiv Abu-Hamud and another passenger were gravely injured in a traffic accident which took place at Ir HaCarmel. The accident took place when Hamud’s car swerved out of his lane, for reasons yet unknown, and crashed into a tree. Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding this accident.

Also Friday, Miriam Brazilay, an 88-year-old Bnei Brak resident, was killed in a “hit and run” accident in Amaram Gaon Street in Beni Brak. Police stopped a newspaper delivery man from Rishon Lezion for questioning in this matter after he was spotted at a nearby gas station with blood-stains on his vehicle.

Late Thursday night 40-year old pedestrian was killed in a traffic accident that took place on Highway number 4, north of Raanana Junction. The pedestrian was struck by a northbound vehicle and received severe blows to his entire body. MDA medics called to the scene had little to do but pronounce him dead.
