Communist-inspired Christofias wins Cyprus presidential election

Communist-rooted Dimitris Christofias won Cyprus' crucial presidential runoff Sunday, according to official results, sending supporters flooding onto the streets of Nicosia waving Cypriot flags and banners of Che Guevara.

With 99.2% of ballots counted, Christofias won 53.38% of the vote, against 46.62% for conservative rival loannis Kasoulides. State-run Cyprus News Agency said Kasoulides conceded defeat in a telephone call to Christofias to congratulate him. (AP)
