Several rallies were held in east Jerusalem and the Old City, and business owners launched a partial strike to express solidarity with the Strips' residents.

The Jerusalem District Police detained four Arab youngsters suspected of threatening business owners to shut down.

Additionally, dozens of female Palestinian teens marched down Salah al-Din Street, carrying posters of "shahids."

Protests were also held in the West Bank Sunday, and many took to the streets in Jenin to demonstrate following reports of mounting casualties in Gaza. Hundreds of people rallied in Ramallah against the operation, and similar protest are scheduled to take place later in the day.

The UN Security Council on Sunday urged Israel and Palestinian militants to cease all violence in Gaza after the UN Secretary-general condemned what he called Israel's "excessive" use of force.

The European Union also condemned what it called "disproportionate use of force" by the Israeli military in Gaza.
