EU soldier missing in Sudan in first incident for EUFOR peacekeeping force

None

A spokesman for the European peacekeeping force in Chad says a soldier is missing after a vehicle accidentally strayed into Sudan and a recovery effort was met with gunfire.

A vehicle with two soldiers from the force, known as EUFOR, strayed across the Chad border into Sudan, said Commandant Dan Harvey. An attempted recovery ''was met with hostile fire,'' Harvey said. No further information was immediately available, including on the second soldier. This is the first known incident since EUFOR began mounting a peacekeeping force to protect refugees from Darfur. So far, some 600 soldiers are in place. Some 3,700 peacekeepers are planned. (AP)
