Police to remain on high state of alert

Heightened state of alert declared following terror attack in Jerusalem to remain in place pending further security assessments

Isreali security forces in the capital maintained a heightened state of alert Friday night, more than 24 hours after the deadly attack at Mercaz Harav yeshiva in Jerusalem.

A source in the Jerusalem District Police told Ynet that the police have intelligence indicating more terror attacks are underway, and that the heightened state of alert is expected to remain in place at least until next week.

Police sources have stressed that there is no indication of an imminent threat, but nevertheless, the police deployed mass forces throughout the country in an effort to focus on terror prevention.

Police efforts will include more visible police presence in crowded places, patrols and roadblocks.

Vigilance

Police Commissioner Dudi Cohen held a security assessment Friday afternoon at the Western Wall and was briefed by Jerusalem District Police Commander Major-General Aharon Franco on the overall situation in the capital's area.

Friday's prayer service at Temple Mount was undisturbed, but the police and Shin Bet remain vigilant, as intelligence indicates the Islamic Movement may try to stir up riots in Jerusalem.

The closure imposed on the West Bank by Defense Minister Ehud Barak following Thursday's shooting will remain in place pending further defense establishment security assessments. The next security briefing is scheduled for Saturday night.

Though closed, Israel will allow traffic through the Gaza crossings in cases of medical and humanitarian emergencies.
