Sister allegedly murdered over refusal to marry

Three brothers, their uncle indicted of kidnapping and murdering 21-year-old Ramla woman after she refused to marry man she was engaged to

Three brothers and their uncle of the Abu Amar family of Ramla, were indicted of kidnapping and murdering their 21-year-old sister, Nadia Abu-Amr, on November 2007.

According to the indictment filed with the Petach Tikva District Court, the four kidnapped the woman after she refused to marry the man she was engaged to. They then murdered her and burnt her clothes. Her body has yet to be found.

The indictment, filed by the Central District Prosecutor's Office, stated that Nadia became engaged to a young man in 2004. After six months, however, she informed her father that she refuses to marry the man she was promised to as she has met someone else.

After allegedly receiving threats from her family members, Nadia filed a complaint with the police, saying that her father beat her. The father was arrested and later convicted of assault. Nadia was transferred to a hostel for battered women.

Following the incident, the indictment said, the complainant's brothers – Abdullah, 19, Wadia, 22, and Naif, 30 – decided to murder her along with their uncle Rami, 35. They allegedly agreed that Wadia would telephone his sister using a false identity and tempt her to meet him, and the others would then kidnap and murder her.

'She deserved to die'

The three brothers obtained a cellular phone, and Wadia began calling his sister in a bid to start a romantic relationship. At the beginning of 2007, Nadia arrived at her sister's home in Haifa and stayed there for one day. Wadia asked her to meet him that day.

He arrived at the meeting with his brother Abdullah, and the two kidnapped their sister in a commercial vehicle, taking her to an isolated area near Moshav Matzliach, where they were met by the other two suspects.

Together, they allegedly murdered her and hid her body. According to the indictment, Rami burnt Nadia's belongings and buried the remnants in the isolated area.

The District Prosecutor's Office asked the court to extend the four suspect's remand until all legal proceedings are completed, claiming that the murder was carefully planned and that the prosecution has concrete evidence tying the suspects to the case.

The evidence includes a statement by one of the suspects saying he had "slaughtered" his sister and that she "deserved to die." Another suspect partially confessed to the crime, while a third suspect reenacted the murder.
