Evangelicals hug Sderot

Christian association Hugs for Israel surprises rocket-stricken town's children with new puppet show fittings, to be used to fight fears – and have fun

Members of the Evangelical association Hugs for Israel arrived in Sderot on Monday carrying a special surprise for the rocket-battered city's children – a full fledged puppet show.

"Several of our members came to Sderot for the first time several years ago, after children here were killed," Brenda Giles of Hugs for Israel told Ynet.

"After that, we came up with an idea to use the puppet show as a way for them to deal with traumatic situations. The children can use it to express anger and fear and they can hug them if they're feeling sad."

Giles was taken on a tour of the city by Shosh Assido, of the Sderot Municipality education department. The two visited several kindergartens showing the children the puppets, and the auxiliary equipment that comes with them, such as the mock-stage, behind which the puppeteer can hide.

"The puppets can help replace the grownups, if they're not there," said Giles, "and of course – they can use them to put up a puppet show."
