Barak okays deployment of 600 PA officers in Jenin

Palestinian security forces to be allowed to enter West Bank town while IDF will maintain military control of Jenin. Israel will also assist PA to hold international business conference in May

Defense Minister Ehud Barak plans to allow 600 Palestinian officers to enter the West Bank town of Jenin.

The defense minister will notify Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad of Israel's decision during their meeting Wednesday.

Israel will also assist the Palestinians to hold an international business conference in the PA in May.

In a visit to the Tel Hashomer recruitment base near Tel Aviv Tuesday, Barak said that while the IDF's topmost responsibility was the safety of the people of Israel, Israel must nevertheless "ease the situation of the Palestinians," even at the cost of taking calculated risks, in order to facilitate peace talks.

The IDF will maintain military control of Jenin, while the PA officers will be in charge of enforcing law and order in town.

The Palestinian officers are currently training in Jordan as part of a US program to help the PA deal with law enforcement problems in the West Bank.
