Earlier Sunday, two Qassam rockets fired on open areas in the Sha'ar Hanegev Regional Council, causing no damage.

Six Hamas operatives were killed Saturday in a series of IAF strikes on northern Gaza, which followed Saturday's infiltration attempt at Kerem Shalom.

Security tensions aside, thousands of Israelis used the long weekend and shiny weather to visit the western Negev and Sderot's Ivim Park.

As part of the hightened security alert announced before Passover, the IDF has prepared for several escalation scenarios over the holiday including mass rocket fire at the western Negev, attempted terror attacks near the security fence, as well as attempted abductions of soldiers – as was the case in Kerem Shalom.

The foiled border incident was an obvious attempt to make an operational statement, a senior IDF officer told Ynet Saturday. "The creativity demonstrated by the terrorists, was meant to carry out a 'quality' attack. Dead or kidnapped troops would have dramatically changed the situation in Gaza both over the holiday and in the future."
