3 wanted Palestinians escape from Jericho jail

Three more members of Fatah's military wing arrested for their acts against Israel manage to flee PA prison

Three wanted members of the al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, Fatah's military wing, escaped Monday morning from the Palestinian Authority prison in Jericho.

The three were arrested for their activities against Israel, and the Palestinian security forces are now combing the area in search of the inmates.

Ynet has learned that one of the fugitives is Hani Halaweh, whose name is also on the list of wanted Palestinians Israel has agreed to pardon for a probation period. Halaweh had complained that he was still being held in imprisonment conditions despite his name being on the list.

The two others who escaped are Nidal Malash from the Ida refugee camp near Bethlehem and Mahmoud Sabeih from a village near Jenin. Their friends from the Jericho prison told Ynet that the three had complained of their imprisonment conditions and expressed their rage over the fact that all their requests to be included in the amnesty list were not met.

Palestinian security sources told Ynet that the options to flee Jericho were limited and that therefore the IDF may reach the wanted men. The PA is looking into the incident.

On Friday, a wanted Palestinian who escaped from jail carried out a shooting attack at the Nitzanei Shalom industrial zone in the Sharon region, which left two Israelis dead. According to Palestinian sources, the armed man arrived disguised as a woman at the Israeli village of Qalansuwa, where he changed into the clothes of a laborer, and later arrived at the crossing near the industrial zone and carried out the attack.

In February, a group of 14 wanted Palestinians incarcerated in a Nablus prison as part of an agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, escaped from jail.

Among the fugitives is Mahadi Abu Rizala, a prominent the al-Aqsa Martyr's Brigades operative. The men who escaped were seeking to protest the conditions of their imprisonment, which they say have not improved despite promises made by the PA.
