Palestinian wounded in stabbing attempt dies

Soldiers manning checkpoint in South Mount Hebron open fire as man approaches them in possession of knife; Palestinian evacuated to Israeli hospital for treatment but succombs to wounds following morning

The Palestinian man wounded on Friday evening as he attempted to stab soldiers manning an IDF crossing in South Mount Hebron died of his wounds Saturday morning.

A Magen David Adom intensive care crew dispatched to the checkpoint evacuated the Palestinian to an Israeli hospital in moderate to serious condition.

Earlier Friday, IDF soldiers arrested another Palestinian who arrived at a checkpoint south of the West Bank city of Tulkarem in possession of a knife. The 11-centimter (4.33-inch) knife was confiscated and the man was taken in for questioning by the police.

The closure placed on the West Bank prior to the onset of Holocaust Remembrance Day was lifted Friday following a security assessment.

Passage during the closure was granted only for humanitarian causes. The closure is mostly likely to resume just before Israel's Fallen Soldiers and Victims of Terrorism Remembrance Day marked next week. The decision is subject to the defense establishment's next security assessment.

The defense establishment currently has various intelligence indicating terror groups' intentions to carry out attacks, including projectile fire from Gaza, suicide and shooting attacks, attempted abductions, mainly in the West Bank, as well as dozens of other general security advisements.

Major-General Amos Yadlin, Director of Military Intelligence warned the cabinet ministers earlier this week that Military Intelligence “knows of intentions by terrorist organizations to perform a “quality” attack on Independence Day, similar to the previous Passover attack. A combined attack is also possible – including soldier abductions.”
