Jon Voight in Sderot: We need to care for Jewish nation

Oscar-winning Hollywood star and father of Angelina Jolie arrives in Israel, visits Qassam-bombarded town

American actor Jon Voight arrived in Israel on Tuesday for a tour with Chabad’s Children of Chernobyl’s (CCOC). Voight is known best for the Oscar he received for "Coming Home," and for being the father of superstar Angelina Jolie.

His visit to Sderot began at the municipality with an entourage of Chabad representatives from the US and Sderot where they met and spoke with Sderot Mayor Eli Moyal.

Afterwards, they made there way to the conference room in which Voight saw Qassam rockets next to pictures of people killed in the city and asked Moyal in shock, “What is this?” Moyal explained that that specific Qassam fell in his yard and he decided to bring it to the municipality.

Moyal told Voight and the other American visitors about the difficulties entailed in living in a city constantly hit by qassams and how children are being raised with symptoms of post-traumatic stress which affect their behavior.

Voight expressed his deep concern regarding the abnormal environment in which Israeli children are being raised. He also stated his views pertaining to the hatred instilled in the hearts of Palestinian children, who he believes are being instilled with values of war.

The actor was instructed on how to respond in case a Color Red alert is sounded during his visit. He explained to Ynet that wherever he went in the city, he searched out the nearest shelter.

He also said that because he reached the ripe age of 69, he was not afraid to visit Sderot. For this reason, his main mission was to instill hope in the hearts of Sderot’s children, Israel’s future.

Voight mentioned the significance of maintaining the strength of the Jewish nation and of the State of Israel.

He requested to pass a message to the people of Sderot specifically and to Israel in general, saying that the story of the Jewish nation is the grandest in the history of humankind and that the continuity of the Jewish people lies in the hands of its children who need to be taken care of.
