Talks with Syria to resume next week

Prime minister's office trying keep scheduling details of meeting with Syrians under wraps, but Jerusalem officials tell Ynet representatives from both countries expected to meet in Turkey as early as next week. Fate of Shebaa farms may be on agenda

Official sources in Jerusalem told Ynet on Tuesday night that the negotiations between Israel and Syria will resume next week in Turkey.

The al-Arabiya news network said the disputed Shebaa Farms region may end be on the table as the representatives sit down with Turkish mediators once more to continue the peace talks.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's Office has so far maintained a veil of secrecy over the exact date of the meetings, possibly out of concern that such exposure could hamper the talks. The Syrians as well have been keeping mum about the schedule and location of the negotiations.

Israel's representatives to the second round of talks are expected to be Olmert's chief of staff, Yoram Turbowitz, and senior diplomatic advisor, Shalom Turgeman.

During his visit to the United States last week, Olmert briefed administration officials of new developments in the talks with Damascus and stressed Israel would not allow efforts to advance peace with Syria to infringe on negotiations with the Palestinian Authority.

In his meetings in Washington, Olmert expressed his belief that pursuing the Syrian channel will prove important to the West.

Back to Shebaa Farms

The al-Arabiya television network said of the upcoming talks that they will possibly involve discussions

regarding the fate of the Shebaa Farms.

Israel's official policy remains that the dispute over region, which borders on both Syria and Lebanon, should be taken up with the Syrians.

This was Israel's main argument against Lebanon, led by Hizbullah, laid claim to the land, which was seized in the Six Day War.
