Fans celebrate German soccer win with Nazi chants

Group of far-right revelers marches through German town following win against Portugal

Dozens of far-right revelers celebrated the German national soccer team's victory over Portugal on Thursday night by chanting Nazi-era slogans in the streets of an eastern town, police said Friday.

Shortly after Germany beat Portugal in the European Championship quarterfinals 3-2, a group of 75 people marched through the streets of Bautzen, in the eastern state of Saxony, chanting "Sieg Heil" And "Deutschland ueber alles," (Germany above everything) Police spokeswoman Petra Kirsch said.

Police were called when the marchers blocked a main road. They took nine revelers into custody for disturbing the peace. The marchers had broken off of a group of 250 people that descended upon the city center after the soccer game ended, police said.

Some people in the crowd threw glass bottles at police who arrived at the scene, while others set off fireworks.

Saxony is a stronghold of the far-right National Democratic Party. It is one of two states where the party holds seats in the regional parliament.
