Israelis detained in Bulgaria airport acquitted

Detainees freed following speedy trial; relative: They didn't believe such anti-Semitism exists

The three Israeli passengers detained Thursday night at a Bulgarian airport after clashing with one of the flight attendants in their plane were acquitted in a speedy trial Friday evening.

The Foreign Ministry confirmed the report.

Earlier, Ynet reported that a female passenger onboard the flight to Bulgaria was pushed by a male flight attendant and screamed at him, prompting the mayhem. The incident began after the flight attendant supposedly wanted to pass and the woman asked him to wait. He refused and pushed her down to her seat.

Police officers were waiting at the gate when the plane arrived, and the flight attendant also pointed to 52-year-old Israeli man, claiming that he was trying to open the emergency door during the flight. The man and his son were soon arrested.

A woman only identified as A., whose father and brother were detained, told Ynet: "The trial lasted four hours. They were acquitted and the State apologized to them. They returned to their hotel."

Addressing the circumstances of the incident, A. said: "There was an argument between a woman and a flight attendant in the plane, and my father happened to pass there en route to the bathroom and bent down to tie his shoelaces near the plane's door. He didn't try to open the door. He's not mentally disabled."

A. added that more than 10 Bulgarian police officers resorted to unnecessary violence against passengers.

"My brother's hand was broken…he was taken to the hospital before the trial began," she said. "They were in shock. They never went through anything like that. They didn't believe there was such anti-Semitism in the world."
