Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Wednesday that the State has invested NIS 2.75 billion (approx. $837 million) in rehabilitating northern Israel since the Second Lebanon War ended.
According to Olmert, the money was used to renovate shelters, schools and infrastructure.
"Anyone who visits the north, and I've had the chance to do so a number times over the past few months, can see that it is flourishing and prospering like never before," he told a meeting of the cabinet on northern affairs.
The prime minister called on the various ministries to work toward expediting the renovation process in the north "in order to bring about a developmental boost there in accordance with this government's policy.
"Our main objective is to develop the periphery," he added.
