Shriki, who suffered a head wound, was shot together with fellow Border Guard officer Imad Gadir, who was moderately injured, by a terrorist who escaped to a nearby Muslim cemetery and has yet to be captured. The Jerusalem Magistrate's Court issued a gag order on the shooting attack's investigation details.

First to arrive at the shooting scene were another Border Guard officer and a policeman who were patrolling the area. The two heard the shooting but thought it was emanating from a nearby wedding. When the shooting escalated to an exchange of fire the two hurried to the site and found one of the wounded men lying on the ground while the other was busy firing back.
The security forces launched an extensive search after the shooter during which nearby streets had been closed off for traffic. A police helicopter also joined in the search.
