Russia says can't back UN draft Georgia resolution

Russia's UN ambassador said on Tuesday Moscow could not support a French draft of a proposed council resolution demanding an immediate Russian military withdrawal from Georgia.

Ambassador Vitaly Churkin told the council the resolution should incorporate and endorse a six-point peace plan promoted by French President Nicolas Sarkozy and signed by both Georgia and Russia.Since the draft resolution did not do this, "the Russian Federation will not be able to support (it)," he said. Russia holds a veto in the council. So far there has been no move to put the resolution to a vote. (Reuters)
