"It's very exciting. These are grenades that were used to protect the Jewish settlement during the time of the mandate," said 61-year old town resident Ariel Ashiri. "One of the laborers was digging with a bulldozer near a house in the old part of the town, and he hit something. He called me and I discovered an old barrel. I knew immediately what it was," he told Ynet.

"We called the police and they opened the barrel in an open space so no one would get hurt. Inside the barrel we found 24 hand grenades from the time of the mandate. We laughed at the find and rejoiced; it's definitely a happy occasion," he said.

"The news has spread from mouth to mouth in the town, and I believe in all of Ness Ziona. It's really a piece of history, especially now when grenades are being used against us – it's nice to find such important weaponry used to defend the settlement."
