Police mull Olmert indictment

Investigators involved in probes against prime minister expected to render recommendation on criminal charges by day's end. Should State Prosecutor's Office accept brief, charges may be filed after High Holidays

The moment of truth has arrived: Unless the unexpected happened, the police are expected to announce Sunday that the three investigations against Prime Minister Ehud Olmert have been concluded, and that they would be recommending criminal charges be brought against him.

Commander Yohanan Danino, head of the police's Investigations and Intelligence Unit, along with Major-General Yoav Segalovich, head of Lahav 433, National Fraud Unit Brigadier-General Shlomi Ayalon and their teams, have been holding consecutive sessions on the matter since last Thursday.

After a five-debate Sunday, Danino was expected to give Police Commissioner Dudi Cohen an update on the matter, before making a public statement. The police are adamant about turning the case over to the State Prosecutor's Office before the end of the day, unless additional investigation proves essential.

Sources in law enforcement have said that the evidence gathered in all three cases – the Talansky Affair, the "Olmertours" case and the Investment Center scandal – are likely to mature into an indictment, which in turn, is expected to be filed by the end of October.

Amir Dan, Olmert's communications advisor, said that the prime ministers's legal team "will not be surprised by the police's decision. T

"They have no choice but to recommend an indictment – they have to justify bringing down an acting prime minister," he added
